What is a hula hoop?

What comes to mind when you think of a hula hoop? Have you ever hula hooped before? Should you start hula hooping? Let’s dive in and find out what a hula hoop actually is.

A dictionary definition of a hula hoop

What is a hula hoop?

According to the “Oxford Languages” on Google, a hula hoop is “A large hoop spun around the body by gyrating the hips, for play or exercise. For the verb definition it says, “spin the hula hoop around the body by gyrating the hips.”

I think I’m going to have to find a better dictionary definition of a hula hoop because that sentence doesn’t even use the word hula hoop as a verb. It just goes to show that you cannot always trust the first definition that you find on the internet.

If you ask me, that’s a lot of use of the word “gyrating” and if I had no idea what a hula hoop was it would be hard for me to visualize based off of this definition. If I were to pick up a hula hoop, gyrate my hips and let go of the hoop, I’m pretty sure the hula hoop would immediately fall down.

Another hula hoop definition

A typical hula hoop is a circular shaped toy made of hollow plastic tubing that is spun around the waist and various limbs. Did you know that hula hoops have been used by people of all ages since ancient times? Modern hula hoops were inspired by Australian bamboo hoops.

I think that definition is even better than the first one. Can you visualize a hula hoop and the way that you can use it? Now imagine yourself getting a fun and challenging workout from hula hooping. Hula hooping is a fun spin on exercise that works your whole body and your mind.
